Josh has been studying martial arts since the age of 5. He has practiced Kenpo Karate, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu. He competed in Karate, Kickboxing, and Wrestling.
He is currently a 6th-degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and is a Professor of the Arts. Josh has over 25 years of coaching experience in martial arts and served as Secretary for the West Texas USA Boxing Region.
He developed the Lubbock Boxing Competition Team and is active in many different roles within amateur boxing. His career in coaching began at Poway Martial Arts under his father, Barry Barker (a Master of the Arts), in Poway, California, where he grew up training in American Kenpo Karate.
Outside of his coaches and parents, Barry Barker and Rose Sumpter, his coaches included: Coach Wayne Brandstetter (Poway Wrestling Coach) and Victor ‘VZ’ Zamora (Boxing Coach). Archie “Mongoose” Moore taught VZ.
Joshua began his career in coaching at Poway Martial Arts in San Diego. He developed programs at both Poway Martial Arts and Lubbock Boxing Club. He eventually created a competition team that competes all over the United States.
As the Head Coach of Lubbock Boxing Club, Joshua has cornered countless fights and developed fighters from no experience to becoming nationally ranked in their division. His passion for developing athletes has led him to become an official. The need for officials is prevalent. Without officials, USA Boxing tournaments get canceled.
Joshua’s passion for his fighters’ desire to compete led him to officiate. The shortage of officials led Josh to officiate over 100 fights with USA Boxing. In this process, he developed coaches to support and eventually lead his team and built a supporting team to help officiate other events. With the support of his family and team in Lubbock, he came to develop and grow the program here at the Queen’s Dojo.
